Qualifications: MBChB (Sheffield 2009), MRCGP, DRCOG
I qualified ‘Up North’ in Sheffield in 2009 and I have had the great privilege of working as a Doctor ever since. Like many of my patients I moved down to Cornwall to be near the coast and to enjoy the wonderful outdoors. I briefly moved home to Nottingham to undertake Core Medical Training in 2011 but Cornwall pulled me back again and I suspect I am here to stay – especially in light of the fact I have married a Cornish sailor! General Practice for me is challenging but extremely rewarding. I am fortunate to work within a friendly, highly skilled and supportive team. I am interested in all aspects of general practice especially women’s health and have obtained a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Outside of work I am busy caring for my toddler and I am often to be found trying to entice her away from the beach. |

Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Nurse Practitioners These are very experienced Registered Nurses who have undertaken additional clinical training and academic qualifications, usually to a Masters degree for Advanced Nurse Practitioners. They are able to examine, assess, make diagnoses, treat, prescribe and make referrals for patients who present with undiagnosed/undifferentiated problems. They work alongside GP colleagues, seeing patients autonomously but, as with their GP colleagues, always have access to specialist advice when necessary. Urgent Care Nurses Urgent care nurses are qualified nurses who have had extra advanced training to treat Minor Illness and undiagnosed conditions. Most urgent care nurses are nurse prescribers. St Austell Healthcare employs both practice nurses and urgent care nurses, who do quite different jobs. If in any doubt, please speak to reception. You may need a separate appointment with a different nurse to provide you with the care that you need. |
Practice Nurses Appointments with practice nurses vary from 10 to 30 minutes duration depending on the type of request presented. These appointments are booked in advance. They will change dressings, remove sutures, perform immunisations, smear tests, etc. They also provide specialist advice on diabetes care, asthma and heart disease. To assist the receptionists, it would be helpful to share the reason for your appointment to ensure you are booked with an appropriate clinician and allocated the appropriate amount of time. Healthcare Assistants Appointments with Healthcare Assistants vary from 10 to 30 minutes duration depending on the type of request presented. These appointments are booked in advance. Our Healthcare Assistants carry out blood tests, blood pressure monitoring and ECGs. |

Physician Associate Physician associates are healthcare professionals with a generalist medical education, who work alongside GPs providing medical care as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team. |
Social Prescribing
St Austell Healthcare has recently started a physical activity based Social Prescribing Service for patients. Community/social prescribing is a way of linking patients to sources of appropriate, non-clinical support in the community. The social prescribing facilitators provide links for patients to opportunities that will support them with improving their physical and mental wellbeing. Programmes are bespoke for individual patient needs combining follow-up and motivational interviewing. Some of the initiatives we can refer patients to include: walking groups, support groups, exercise classes, gardening groups and gym based opportunities. Many have charges associated with their services but offer concessions for St Austell Healthcare patients. We are not currently accepting self-referrals but if you feel that you would benefit from this service please speak to a member of our team who can refer you to the Social Prescribing Team. |
