Dr Fiona Hickey
Qualifications: MBChB (Sheffield 2009), MRCGP, DRCOG
I qualified ‘Up North’ in Sheffield in 2009 and I have had the great privilege of working as a Doctor ever since. Like many of my patients I moved down to Cornwall to be near the coast and to enjoy the wonderful outdoors. I briefly moved home to Nottingham to undertake Core Medical Training in 2011 but Cornwall pulled me back again and I suspect I am here to stay – especially in light of the fact I have married a Cornish sailor!
General Practice for me is challenging but extremely rewarding. I am fortunate to work within a friendly, highly skilled and supportive team. I am interested in all aspects of general practice especially women’s health and have obtained a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Outside of work I am busy caring for my toddler and I am often to be found trying to entice her away from the beach.

Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Nurse Practitioners
These are very experienced Registered Nurses who have undertaken additional clinical training and academic qualifications, usually to a Masters degree for Advanced Nurse Practitioners. They are able to examine, assess, make diagnoses, treat, prescribe and make referrals for patients who present with undiagnosed/undifferentiated problems. They work alongside GP colleagues, seeing patients autonomously but, as with their GP colleagues, always have access to specialist advice when necessary.
Urgent Care Nurses
Urgent care nurses are qualified nurses who have had extra advanced training to treat Minor Illness and undiagnosed conditions. Most urgent care nurses are nurse prescribers.
St Austell Healthcare employs both practice nurses and urgent care nurses, who do quite different jobs. If in any doubt, please speak to reception. You may need a separate appointment with a different nurse to provide you with the care that you need.
Practice Nurses
Appointments with practice nurses vary from 10 to 30 minutes duration depending on the type of request presented. These appointments are booked in advance.
They will change dressings, remove sutures, perform immunisations, smear tests, etc. They also provide specialist advice on diabetes care, asthma and heart disease.
To assist the receptionists, it would be helpful to share the reason for your appointment to ensure you are booked with an appropriate clinician and allocated the appropriate amount of time.
Healthcare Assistants
Appointments with Healthcare Assistants vary from 10 to 30 minutes duration depending on the type of request presented. These appointments are booked in advance.

Our Healthcare Assistants carry out blood tests, blood pressure monitoring and ECGs.

Social Prescribing
St Austell Healthcare has recently started a physical activity based Social Prescribing Service for patients.

Community/social prescribing is a way of linking patients to sources of appropriate, non-clinical support in the community. The social prescribing facilitators provide links for patients to opportunities that will support them with improving their physical and mental wellbeing. Programmes are bespoke for individual patient needs combining follow-up and motivational interviewing.

Some of the initiatives we can refer patients to include: walking groups, support groups, exercise classes, gardening groups and gym based opportunities. Many have charges associated with their services but offer concessions for St Austell Healthcare patients.

We are not currently accepting self-referrals but if you feel that you would benefit from this service please speak to a member of our team who can refer you to the Social Prescribing Team.

Administrative Teams
Receptionists
Receptionists provide an important link for patients with the practice and are your initial contact point for general enquiries. They can provide basic information on services and results and direct you to the right person depending on your health issue or query.
Reception
Data Management Team
We have a team of administrators who manage all incoming correspondance to the Practice. They are also responsible for our in house recall programs.
Medical Secretaries
We have a team of secretaries who send the referral letters on behalf of our doctors. Urgent referrals are sent within 24 hours of you seeing the doctor.  Routine referrals are completed within two weeks.
Most referral letters are sent electronically to the Referral Management Service (RMS) in Truro who hold them and distribute them to the various specialist departments. You can contact the Referral Management Service directly by calling 01872 226700.
If you have already been sent an appointment then you should ring the telephone number on your hospital letter.
For all other queries call our referral line on 01726 871990 to speak directly to one of our secretaries (Monday to Friday 9am to 12noon).
Medical Records Team
We have a medical records team that look after all of the medical records, and summarise new patient's records.

Community Teams

Community Midwives
The Midwives work with the doctors to care for the mother before, during and after delivery. Antenatal clinics are by appointment only. In an emergency the "on call" midwife number is 0800 525900. Non-emergency calls should be directed to the maternity unit on 01726 873079.
Community Nurses
Our Community Nurses have a wide range of responsibilities and experience in providing general nursing care in the community. If you are housebound, you do not need a referral from the doctor and can contact them directly on 01726 873090 / 873091 or leave a message on their answerphone.
If you are living in Foxhole, Bugle, Roche or St Dennis you will need to contact the
Clays District Nurses on 01726 891998. If you are living in Par the number for the Par District Nurses is 01726 813431.
Health Visitors
A Health Visitor is a registered nurse who has received training particularly related to babies, children and pregnant women. Their role is to provide families with children under five years old with support and advice around the general aspects of mental, physical and social wellbeing.
You do not need a referral from the doctor and can contact the St Austell team of Health Visitors directly. Their admin team can be contacted on 01726 879277 or the health visitors can be contacted on 01726 223514.
